We use the designation of Sherlockiana to denote books and other material by or about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his creation, Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes in 1887 with A Study in Scarlet followed by in the 1890s by the short stories that make up the first collection, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was not long before other authors wrote the first of the parodies and pastishes. This literary activity continues to produce stories in one of the largest of the sub-genres of detective fiction.
The Golden Age of Mysteries commonly refers to the period between World War I & World War II. Prominent among the Golden Age writers were English writers Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Anthony Berkeley, G.K. Chesterton, R. Austin Freeman & John Rhodes.
Many of the English writers formed the Detection Club, which championed the "fair play" mystery, meaning that the reader saw all the clues that the detective saw and could solve the crime at the same time as the detective. Such American writers as Ellery Queen & John Dickson Carr were of the same school & Carr, who moved to England, was an active member of the Detection Club.
During the same period, an number of American writers started writing stories for the pulp magazine, noted for their lurid covers & more violent content. Among these writers were Erle Stanley Gardner, Dashiell Hammett & Raymond Chandler.
